TOYKO WRAP UP

Already the weeks have passed since the Closing Ceremony, we are sure many of you have spent some time reflecting on these remarkable Olympic Games, including ourselves.

With two of the loveliest and well performed horses, you still don’t make it! Certainly, the stars were not aligned for us. Some say, ‘The Universe was telling us it was not meant to be’. Whatever the reason, you learn it was not your turn and have to look to the future and where you go next.

It certainly has been a journey like no other, due to horse quarantine, COVID plus having no events here, Stuart has ‘Leporis’ in the UK- while the yard keeps going here in Australia. What Stuart does next with ‘Leo’ is still a work in progress, we have some options up our sleeve but still working on all the logistics.

COVID has been so damaging to so many, we are grateful we got to travel in these times, which was another experience being in ‘ghost airports’, no shops, being ushered into holding compounds, spit COVID tests, the list of unusual events was long! We were so grateful to Japan for putting these Games together for the athletes. Exceptional management by a city of determination. Their ability to stay happy and so welcoming to us all, Thank -You 🙂

Thank-you too to our amazing sponsors and owners which continue to give us their full support, Horseland, CopRice, Ceva and Bates. Elisabeth Brinton, Tim Game and the Blair Weller family. Thank-you TRM for your support to our team up to and during the Games:) HIDEZ Suits.

We just wanted to share a heartfelt letter we received from Mr. Ian Chesterman, Australian Chef de mission, which pretty much summed up all the National bodies on their incredible achievement, getting all our athletes to Tokyo during a pandemic!

The Tokyo Games were a triumph for the Olympic Movement as Australians embraced our sports and our athletes like never before. Access through so many media channels, with so many in lockdowns at home, meant more people than ever before watched our Team in action.

The results were superb, not just in medals, but with so many athletes producing their best, while also conducting themselves in a way that enhanced their own reputation and that of the Australian Olympic Team and their sports.

I wanted to add my thanks to you, the leaders and support staff of our sports who worked so hard to make these Games a success for our athletes.

At my final media conference in Tokyo, I emphasised the role you all played in our Team’s success.

  • “Our sports, their high performance and coaching staff did a magnificent job.”
  • “Our National Federations were our true partners. They, too, had to overcome so many obstacles on the road to Tokyo. Their dedication created the opportunity for the athletes to be here and their high-performance staff planned meticulously for success.”
  • “Without doubt the greatest contributor to our success was the incredible work of coaches and support staff along with our amazing and inspiring athletes.”

To everyone who worked with our athletes on this Olympic campaign, I say thank you. This was a tough campaign, which took its toll on everyone across not four but five years. But what I witnessed, both in the long lead up to Tokyo and then at the Games, was people putting in the hard yards to create opportunities for their athletes and their sports.

Everyone involved should take great pride in their role in supporting their athletes and being part of a Team, which was not only highly successful but one that gained the respect of the Australian people and sports around the world.
